When you have arranged a headstone or a monument for your loved one who has died, you should take good care of it. If you do not have idea to take care of it, follow this article.

Granite monuments stand against time as this is a long lasting natural material. Weather elements by their nature leave impact over any headstone. But with granite there is no such effect. Rain washes away dirt and dust off the headstone. Upon visiting a cemetery you will find the granite monuments standing with the shine like the first day, bright with no dull signs. Other materials might not hold the appearance like granite for so long time.

Since the rain washes a monument a simple cloth wipe is enough to clean granite. Use a microfiber or cotton cloth to wipe mud or other residue that may have accumulated over time. There is no need to use any special cleaner or solvents for granite memorials. Granite being a porous material might look a bit darker for a short time after a rain as the memorial collects a little water.

Tips for Cleaning a Monument

  • If there is no physical damage to the monument you can go ahead with the cleaning. Do not use any household cleaner for the stone as it may contain harmful chemicals that may destroy the memorial integrity. For an example, you may use one ounce non-ionic detergent per gallon water for memorial cleaning.

  • When you are cleaning start with the bottom area and go to the top. It will prevent acid or pigment dripping at the fascia of the headstone that may cause staining later.

  • Do not use any metal or wire brushes as it may damage and chip the headstone. It is safe to use a nylon brush or a soft toothbrush as it removes fungi, debris and dirt gently.

  • Do not ever use a power washer as it may cause water retention that in long run will degrade integrity of the structure.

  • The best cleaning material is distilled water for removing debris off the stone and dry pat it using a soft fabric.
